16 Days of Activism 2014

From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let’s Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women! The 2014 16 Days Campaign continues advocacy for awareness and action on the multi-faceted intersections of gender-based violence and militarism, while highlighting the connection between the struggle for economic and social rights and ending gender-based violence. The theme focuses on militarism as a creation and normalization of a culture of fear that is supported by the use or threat of violence, aggression, as well as military intervention in response to political and social disputes or to enforce economic and political interests.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence begins November 25 and continues through December 10, 2014

For many of us in the church, action begins with prayer.  Prayer grounds us and helps us speak the truth into the world, and so we offer you these prayers for each of the 16 days as food for reflection and action. This year, for the first time, we have partnered with A Window Between Worlds (AWBW),  a nonprofit organization dedicated to using art to help end domestic violence. Since 1991, AWBW has provided creative expression as a healing tool for over 49,500 battered women and their children in crisis shelters, transitional homes, and outreach centers throughout the United States.

Holy Land Tour 2014

ECW at Dome of the Rock

Dome of the Rock

The Second Annual ECW Holy Land Tour is scheduled for December 1 through 11, 2014.  The event is being coordinated by ECW President Nancy Crawford, Lynn Headley, and local Anglican guide and instructor, Canon Iyad Qumri.

Travelers will enjoy the beauties of the Mediterranean landscape, while visiting the holiest sites in the Judeo/Christian/Muslim faiths. They will visit the city of Nazareth (the home of the Holy Family), the Basilica of the Annunciation, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Shepherd’s Field, and the site of Jacob’s Well—where Jesus spoke with the Samaritan Woman.

The pilgrims will visit Capernuam and its ancient Synagogue, add their written prayers the ancient Western Wall, and take in the Church of the Loaves and Fishes and the Chapel of St. Peter’s Primacy. The agenda also includes a walk along the Palm Sunday Road, ending in the Garden of Gethsemane, as well as the opportunity to pray the Way of the Cross on the Via Dolorosa, and worship at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Looking for a very Unique and Life-Changing Opportunity?

RUN FOR OFFICE ON THE NATIONAL ECW BOARD!!

Deadline to Submit Nomination Form, Resume & Photo: October 15, 2014 Submit to either Sandra Powers, chair of the nominating committee or Kathy Mank, nominating committee National ECW Board liaison

If you have attended at least one Triennial Meeting the following positions are open to you: Member at Large – Social Justice Member at Large – Multi Media/Communications Secretary Treasurer

If you have previously served a full term on the National ECW Board these positions are open to you: President Vice President of Program Vice President for Information & Communication

Why the early deadline to run for office when the election takes place at Triennial in 2015? • There can be no nominations from the floor • Candidates running must have received consent from the Presiding Bishop and Executive Council to run for office

Why is the National ECW Board subject to these changes? • In response to a resolution at TM 2012, Legal Counsel at the church-wide office in New York City reviewed the structure and relationship of the National ECW Board to The Episcopal Church (TEC) • To comply with church canons and the IRS, bylaw amendments were carefully drafted with Legal Counsel, reviewed by the board Parliamentarian and subsequently adopted in spirit by the 2012-2015 National ECW Board • The new election procedures include the formation of a nominating committee with representatives from all 9 provinces and the creation of a time-line to ensure compliance with the bylaw amendments

Will Province Representatives to the National ECW Board be subject to the new rules? • Yes! Province boards are electing the province reps to the national ECW board at 2014 annual meetings. The province reps’ names will be submitted to the Presiding Bishop at the same time as the names of women running for offices. The province reps elected will be required to complete the same nomination forms. Local bishop recommendation is strongly encouraged if not mandated.

Take this Survey and Share Your Opinion About the Future of ECW

Dear Fellow Members of The Episcopal Church, Empower your voice! We need your help to make a difference.

At Triennial Meeting 2012, delegates adopted Resolution 101/104, which called for the research and review of the present function and structure of the Episcopal Church Women National Board and the mission and purpose of our ECW as a whole. To this end, the National ECW board has appointed an ad hoc committee comprised of one female representative from each of the Episcopal Church’s nine Provinces. The national board will evaluate recommendations submitted by the ad hoc committee to address the resolution and determine what is to be presented at Triennial Meeting 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

We are attempting to determine how the organized ministry of women, known as ECW will have a continuing role and impact on the life of The Episcopal Church. Our Ad Hoc Committee realized that we couldn’t complete this task without your important contributions.  While we are a committee with diverse opinions, there are many more opinions we value – including yours. If you know any women who have participated or currently participate in the ECW, it is important for us to understand their views and ideas, as well.

To gather opinions, we designed a survey that will take about five minutes of your time. In an effort to reach women in each parish, we have sent this letter and information to Provincial and Diocesan leaders asking them to send this letter to as many women as possible in their Province, Diocese, congregations, and other Episcopalian friends.

It is very important that this survey is given not only to women who are currently associated with ECW, but to every woman/man who care about the Episcopal Church.  We would like to hear from as diverse a group as possible.  We would love to hear from the members of your choir, Rectors, Vicars, Priests, Altar Guild, Lay Readers, Sunday school teachers, local ECW chapter members, congregational administrators, and those who are not currently involved beyond worshiping at the local Church level.

We have made the survey accessible and simple to complete:

  • Please submit your completed survey by ___June 30, 2014_______

16 Days of Activism begin November 25

The International Anglican Women’s Network (IAWN) has set the issue of violence against women and girls as its #1 priority for the next several years.   Our General Convention has passed many resolutions on this issue. The women in the Episcopal Church have created this annual campaign through a partnership between ECW, AWE and EWC that began in 2010.

We encourage people — women and men, girls and boys — to mark the 16 Day period by using these prayers, every day during the 16 days, in personal or corporate prayer and worship. We also hope that sermons will be preached, articles will be written, and the bulletin insert will be used as we move through the 16 Day period.

ECW President Nancy Crawford’s Letter about UTO

Dear Episcopal Church Women, Over the past several months, members of the National Episcopal Church Women’s Board have observed the evolving events that have impacted the ministry of the United Thank Offering (UTO). We have felt the pain that has accompanied the changes and our hearts go out to all concerned.

Women’s ministry in the church has a long tradition, and we remember especially the Emery sisters who, in the late 19th Century, were instrumental in the formation of the Women’s Auxiliary and the Box Works. Today, Episcopal Church Women promote a daily, personal practice of prayers of thanksgiving in response to God’s blessings, and encourage tangible, intentional, and daily offering in gratitude for those blessings. In addition they provide UTO boxes in their parishes, place them on tables at their diocesan conventions, and gather them in every spring and every fall year after year. We are thankful for the legacy of women who have gone before us and for those who continue to work tirelessly today.

We are thankful most especially for the UTO leadership, the province leadership, the diocesan and parish coordinators, and the women, men and children who place coins of thankfulness in their UTO blue boxes. As a result of the generous giving of time, talent, and treasure by countless people, many have been helped throughout the world. The ECW Board supports the continuation of coins of thankfulness. We acknowledge and respect the wisdom of the women of the church to make their personal decisions pertaining to thankful giving.

UTO grants are awarded to churches and institutions throughout the Anglican Communion whose people are laboring diligently in the fields to bring about the fulfillment of God’s kingdom here on earth. Sweep away the hostilities, the mistrust and the utter dejection that have been experienced these last several months and what will be found is this: ECW stands firm in its desire to see the work of United Thank Offering continued. We pray that all future decisions will be made with coins of thankfulness in mind.

“For minds to think and hearts to love and hands to serve, we thank you, Lord.”

Your Sister in Christ, Nancy R. Crawford
